Local paranormal society receives Key to City

Salt Lake City
Salt Lake Tribune. Tuesday, April 1, 2008
By Spencer McAllen

Over the past ten years Utah has seen an increase in paranormal groups and a rise in public interest. Although controversy on the paranormal remains in this highly religious community, City officials have decided it is time to “accept and embrace” Utah’s haunted history.
“Ever since I was a young child I knew we were not alone.” Says one Salt Lake City official, “It is time for Utah to not only accept, but embrace our rich [haunted] history.”
This past weekend Salt Lake was host to the World Horror Conference. Authors, writers and illustrators from around the world came to showcase their work at this annual traveling conference. Among many of the attractions of the conference was a scheduled ghost walk of downtown Salt Lake City. Russ Larsen, founder of local paranormal group, Paranormal Utah, was asked to give the tour on short notice.
“It was an honor to be asked to present Salt Lake in a different light than most people know it.” Larsen stated.
What was scheduled to be a two hour walk turned into a two hour presentation at the Radison Hotel in downtown Salt Lake. The cool breeze on Saturday hindered many interested people from taking the walk, so Larsen and the founders of two other local groups, Key2rip and Wasatch Paranormal, took the opportunity to share their experiences and information with guests of the conference.
“I think those guys are crazy,” says Ted Morello. “I would never do half of what they do. They have guts, that’s for sure.”
Ted was among the few people that went on a small tour after the presentation, which concluded in the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Being from Wisconsin, he expressed he had never imagined the rich history of Utah’s past.
Conference goers were not the only ones impressed by the presentation given by the paranormal panel. It seems the experience had an impact all the way to the City offices.
“We have witnessed paranormal activity right here in the City building,” expresses Mayor Becker. “We know this phenomenon is real and it is about time it was presented to the public on a large scale.”
Mayor Becker said he was proud of how Salt Lake was represented this past weekend and as a result announced he would be presenting the Key to the City to Paranormal Utah.
“They have made us proud.” He stated. “We are honored to present the Key to the City to Paranormal Utah. We believe this research should go unhindered, and therefore would like to give them an open invitation to conduct their research in any Salt Lake City run buildings.”
No one was more surprised than Larsen himself who stated he just wanted to present the truth for people to consider.
“We don’t seek fame in this, and we all know we will never make a dime doing research. If anything, it only makes us poorer.” He said in phone interview Monday. “I would like to thank the Mayor for his kindness, and also my team for reading this far into an April fools joke.

Wendover Air Force Base is a former United States Air Force base in Utah. During World War II, it was a training base for B-17 and B-24 bomber crews before being deployed to the European and Pacific Theaters. Also, it was the training site of the 509th Composite Group, the B-29 unit which dropped the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombs.

After the war, Wendover was used for training exercises, gunnery range and research facility. It was closed by the Air Force in 1969, and the base was given to Wendover City in 1977. Tooele County took over ownership of the airport and base buildings in 1998. A portion of the original bombing range is now the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR) which is used extensively by the Air Force with live fire targets on the range.

Wendover Airfield: Paranormal working together
Written by Russ Larsen
Wendover AirfieldWe recently had the opportunity to investigate the Wendover Airfield in Wendover, Utah. This was a great investigation and a lot of paranormal evidence was captured. There were so many places on this old base to investigate, and each place seemed to be quite active. Many investigators had their own personal experiences, a first time experience for many.
The two night investigation was set up and organized by Tom Carr of Wasatch Paranormal Investigators . He did a great job in making the contacts and preparations. His goal was to unite several paranormal groups on one large scale investigation, and promote unity in the paranormal field. Because of this we had the great opportunity to work with Adam and his group, Unknown Utah , and also Michelle and her group, Key2RIP . The teams really worked well together. Some great friendships and connections were made on this investigation.
The history of the place is just amazing and we thank the owners for allowing us access, which included the hangar where the Enola Gay was stationed before the World War II bombings on Japan. They are working so hard to save and restore the history in this location. It would be a shame to see such an significant piece of history lost to weather and time. Check out www.wendoverairbase.com.

Dream visitation

The dream connection
by Russ Larsen

We often hear of experiences where a deceased loved one will make their presence known to the living. Sometimes strange things will occur in the home such as electrical appliances being turned on or off and items being misplaced such as car keys or other personal items. There are even rare examples of a full apparition appearing and speaking with the living, often to comfort them or give them a message. Lost items and important documents have been found as a result of some of these appearances.
Most of us are not sensitive enough, or we close off to the possibility of these encounters. However everyone is capable of dreams. Little is truly known about dreams and the meanings behind them despite the extensive research that has been done regarding them. It is believed that dreaming is the mind’s way of unraveling the endless amounts of input it receives during the awake conscious state. These dreams are often

Ghost hunting: Is there proof?
Written by Russ Larsen

Perhaps one of the most telling signs of an intelligence outside of our own existence, was an electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) we got at Mercur Cemetery. Pat and Gary were both carrying cassette recorders and the unknown voice was recorded on only one. They were standing very close to each other, so their conversation was very clear on both tapes. Mercur Cemetery is a very odd cemetery in that graves are scattered about without any obvious pattern and trees separate different areas of the cemetery. The last known burial was in 1915 and......

The Ouija board: Is it evil?
Written by Russ Larsen

Ouija boardThe Ouija board is often a subject that comes up in conversation when discussing ghosts or ghost investigations. Is it evil? Does it work? These are among the most common questions. I will attempt to answer these based on my opinions and experience in the paranormal.
I don’t believe that the Ouija is any more evil than your telephone. Imagine that you are in Seattle and a friend is in Miami. You can initiate a conversation by simply dialing his phone number and hoping he will pick up on the other end. Though this is much more clear than contacting a spirit or entity through some device, the concept is not that far off. This does however, present the first flaw of using the Ouija.
